1 Grammar 2 Sentence: a grammatically complete group of words that express thought. A sentence usually tells you 2 things: the person, animal, or thing that the sentence is about. what the person, animal, or thing does or is.

2 Sentence fragment: group of words that is not grammatically complete. They may look like a sentences because they start with a capital letter and end with an end punctuation mark, but don’t let that fool you. Example: Fragment: Sketched the lions. Who sketched the lions? Fragment: Jerri and I. Jerri and I sketched the lions. Fragment: While Jerri and I sketched the lions. (Incomplete thought) While Jerri and I sketched the lions, they slept.

3 A sentence always has one of four purposes: 1.Decstatement larative sentences: Make a and end with a period. The parade starts at three o’clock. To explain the broken lamp, we told Moma lie.

4 2. Imperative sentences: Make a command or a request. They end with either a period or (if the command shows strong feeling) an exclamation point. Come to the parade with us. Hurry up, you guys!

5 3. Interrogative sentences: ask a question. They end with a question mark. Isn’t that elephant heading strait toward us?

6 4. Exclamatory sentences: express strong feeling. They end with an exclamation point. Oh, the elephant is loose!

7 Direct object: is a noun or pronoun that receives the action of and action verb. A direct object answers the question whom or what is following the verb. Jenny takes advanced algebra. (Takes-what?- algebra.) Rob tested the twins in math. (Tested-whom?-the twins.)

8 Indirect objects: is a noun or pronoun that answers the question to whom or for whom or to what or for what following an action verb. Indirect objects never stand alone. You can have a D.O. without an I.O., but you can’t have an I.O. without a D.O. The I.O. always comes before the D.O. The mother gives them piano lessons. Please Jim the answer.
