Today’s Goal: Finish group presentations Today’s Question: Do words mean more than just their definition? But First: Our daily student poetry readings!
2
What do words mean? Connotative Meaning What we associate with the word What it means to me Example: Car o VW bug o Freedom o Driver’s License o Going on a date o Accident o What else? Denotative Meaning The word’s literal definition Think of it as what it would say in the dictionary. Example: Car o How would we define it, literally?
3
Group poster project Let’s do an example using the word “rose” Now, as a group, choose one of these words and create your own poster. Include as many connotative meanings as you can! o Pool o Season o Tackle o Date o Crane o Channel o Automatic o Have one you want to do? Ask Mr. Thompson…
4
What to do next… Write a 1-5 on the bottom corner of your poster. A 1 means your group is confused. A 5 means that your group could teach a lesson about connotative meaning! Post your poster on the wall Spend some time looking at other groups’ posters o What connotative meanings surprised you? o What was missing that you would have added?
