1. Portraits explore a basic question: …………….Who am I? A Self Portrait is a picture that an artist takes of himself.

2. Self-portraiture insists the artist embark on a journey of self- exploration in order to make decisions about how to represent him/herself authentically.

3. For each self-portrait, the artist must ask: -What expression, posture, clothing, background, colors, texture, and style best express the real me? - Will different situations change those answers?

4. Self-Portraits Self-portraits are not just a reflection of what they look like but also of how the artist interprets themselves and the world around them.

5. THE ASSIGNMENT!!! Over the next two weeks you will be creating self portraits utilizing the grid system. You will demonstrate your knowledge of value, shape, texture and form to create a successful drawing.

6. Step #1: Taking the photograph Beginning today, I will call you up to photograph each other, using a digital camera. Take 2-3 photographs showing different facial expressions such as: confusion, sadness, anger, happiness, surprised, … show YOUR personality!!!...... –When composing the photo, hold the camera vertically (so the long ways is up and down). –Crop your subject from the shoulders up before taking the picture. –The subject’s face can be on a front or ¾ angle. –Check to make sure the photo is in focus!!! Keep the best one and delete the others

7. Step #2: Create Grid on final drawing paper (large white sheet) - Each student will need to create a grid on a medium or large sheet of paper. See example by windows. Your grid should look exactly the same as the example!!!

8. Step #3: - Create a corresponding grid on photograph self portrait. -You will receive ONLY ONE copy of your self portrait - Create a grid on this portrait using a scale of 1” inch.

9. TODAY: 1.If you have not completed your class project square continue working on it! This is the last day to complete this assignment. 1.If you have completed this assignment you will complete the substitute assignment while you wait to get your photograph taken. 1.Once you have completed the substitute assignment you will work on creating the grid for your assignment.
