Cognitive Commodity #2… pg. 55 Flip through your SSR book and find a sentence with a dash or hyphen. Write it down and label DASH or HYPHEN and tell the “rule” or why it is used. EX: link two words together, used to set off the independent clause from a descriptive phrase, etc.

Dash vs. Hyphen… pg. 56 HYPHEN: *shorter mark *often used to link two or more words together *It can sometimes be seen at the end of a line to break up a whole word that won’t fit into the space. EXAMPLES: The family’s money-saving measures have been helping them to build their savings. I had a conversation with Mrs. Skinner-Kcrycek this morning. DASH: *longer line used as punctuation in sentences *can also be used in pairs EXAMPLE: Mr. Lee is suited to the job— he has more experience than everybody else in the department—but he has been having some difficulties at home recently. There was only one person suited to the job—Mr. Lee.

T-chart… pg. 58 Navy What does Hunter Scott find while researching that shows the Navy’s guilt? Captain McVay What is the Navy using to build its case against Captain McVay? **at least 6 pieces of evidence… you may go ahead and copy what you already have, but it needs to have page numbers and quotes around it.

Ch. 12 Left For Dead

Argument Writing Introductory Paragraph… pg. 57 1) What is your lead?  WE ARE USING A QUOTE! 2) State your claim 3) Introduce your 3 reasons. 4) Conclusion sentence

The great philosopher Plato once said, “Nothing in the affairs of men is worthy of great anxiety,” meaning that nothing we do is worth getting really stressed about. Apparently, the fish in Dr. Seuss’s book The Cat in the Hat did not hear that advice. The fish in The Cat in the Hat is an anxious character. He demonstrates this anxiety at the beginning of the story when the cat arrives, in the middle of the story when Thing 1 and Thing 2 arrive, and at the end of the story when the mother arrives.

Refer to pg. 57… Here are your justice quotes to choose from! 1)Choose the one your want, 2)three pieces of evidence that you think are the strongest, 3) write out your claim statement.
