Here’s the scenario… Ms. Chou is a high school English teacher who has taught since she graduated from university about 10 years ago with a major in English and a minor in secondary education. She has always been concerned about the poor quality of writing she sees in her student’s papers, but she finds it very difficult to get most of them to improve. They seem uninterested in writing, and she is always challenged to motivate them. Lately, she has been reading about expanded definitions of literacy that include digital literacy and thinks that perhaps her young “digital natives: (as Prensky. 2010a referred to them) would enjoy writing more if they were communicating in a “digital language.” She would like to have her students do audio or video interviews of local people who write for a living (e.g. journalists, authors, technical writers) and then create an online hypermedia environment that describes their findings. This would also serve to help them see how important writing is for many professional people. She has almost no experience with doing video or creating hypermedia, but a colleague has volunteered to help her with this project by showing her how to create video and websites.

Chapter 6: Item 4-A TECH-PACK Components: What is known…What must be learned… Technology Ms. Chou has little technology experience/skills, but wants to incorporate it into her lessons to increate students interests in what is being taught. She needs to decide what type of technology she wants to incorporate so that she can get her friend to teach her the specifics of them so she can help her students if they have questions Pedagogy She has been doing research about different types of technology that she would like incorporate into her lesson plans. She must gain more knowledge about the technology she plans to use in her classroom so that she can successfully use it in her classroom. Content She has been teaching English for 10 years after receiving her degree in English with a minor in Secondary Education. Despite being a teacher for many years, she needs to continue to educate herself so that she can adapt as the teaching environment changes.

Chapter 6: 4-B Before Ms. Chou can use technology in her classroom, she needs to practice using it herself. With little to no experience implementing technology, asking her students to use it is unfair and ill-advised. She must learn how to use the technology she desires her students to use so that when they have a question or a technical problem, she can assist them. – A teacher who wants to use technology in the classroom needs to understand how to use it herself so that she can successfully demonstrate it to her students and correctly apply it to her lesson plans. Ms. Chou needs to make sure that the assignments requiring technology can be completed using computer labs at school or at a public library. Due to economic uncertainty, not all families can afford to have a personal computer in their household and so some might not have access to a computer to complete the assignments. Identify the context and logistical issues in this situation that she must address to implement this new strategy effectively in her classroom.
