2. Growth of Public Education By the late 1800s, many governments had set up public schools and made education mandatory. Teachers began receiving training at Normal Schools. John Dalton developed modern atomic theory and Dmitri Mendeleyev developed a table of elements that led to today’s periodic table. Charles Darwin proposed that life forms evolved over time and that successful physical traits were passed on by survivors. 3. Religion in an Urban Age Churches and synagogues tried to relieve the problems brought on by the Industrial Age through charities, schools, and hospitals.
