1 A New Social Order Arises The Industrial Revolution altered the class structure in Western Europe. Some business owners entered the upper class. The middle class grew and developed a code of behavior. By the late 1800s, some countries allowed married women to own and control property. In the early 1900s, women could vote in New Zealand, Australia, and some western U.S. territories. 2 Growth of Public Education By the late 1800s, many governments had set up public schools and made education mandatory. Teachers began receiving training at Normal Schools. John Dalton developed modern atomic theory and Dmitri Mendeleyev developed a table of elements that led to today’s periodic table. Geologists found evidence of the Earth’s age that seemed to contradict bible stories. Charles Darwin proposed that life forms evolved over time and that successful physical traits were passed on by survivors. 3 Religion in an Urban Age Churches and synagogues tried to relieve the problems brought on by the Industrial Age through charities, schools, and hospitals.
