3. First step: Find the verb and subject Ask: Who or what is being done in the sentence? The action is the verb. The actor, or who, is the subject. Example: George slept in the park. What is being done? George slept. Slept is the verb. George is the subject. Example: Pat types on the keyboard. What is being done? Pat types. Types is the verb. Pat is the subject. Those are simple sentences. But the process is the same for sentences with more complex structure. Example: On the stage, the actors dance. What is being done? The actors dance. Dance is the verb. The actors are the subject.

4. Be verbs Not every verb is an action. There are seven be verbs: is are was were be been am Match be verbs to their corresponding person forms: First: I am tired. We are tired. Second: You are tired. You are writers. Third: He will be bad. They have been hunting.
