1 Option Offense and the Running Game Glazier Clinic Chicago 2007 Session #5

2 General Philosophy  Option Football forces the defense to play assignment football.  Option Football allows you to not block up to 2 defenders per play  Option Football puts pressure on the defense from sideline to sideline

3 Versatility  Fits into any offensive structure Split back “I” or Power “I” Full House Wing T Single Back Shotgun

4 Midline and the Inside Veer  At the high school level these plays are paired.  Defenses are hard pressed to stop both plays with the same front.

5 Midline (Mike)  Double Option Attacks the center of the defense Forces the defense to constrict  Give read is the 2 or 3 tech tackle  Tackle and End cross block on DE and LB  HB inserts through C Gap and gets MDM

7 Inside Veer (IV)  Triple option  Attacks inside and outside of Defense  Give Read is the first down Defensive player past the “B” Gap  Pitch Key is the Force Player  Good play to the Tight or Open side

9 Outside Veer  Triple option Attacks the “C” Gap to the outside Forces the defense to expand  PS G, T, and TE responsible for clearing out DT and LB  Give Read is the DE  Pitch off of the force player

11 Lead and Load Options  Lead Double Option PS G,T, and TE take DT and LB WR will crack FB leads out on Corner QB will pitch off DE  Load option Double option This time we will block the DE with FB WR will crack QB will pitch off next defender downfield

14 Complementary Plays  Midline triple options (Marc, Mitch)  An option offense should have the following complements: Reverse Play Action Counter Action  The inside trap with the FB is also an excellent  JET and ROCKET Sweeps
