Important Court Cases p.125 Court Case Marbury v. Madison Plessy v. Ferguson Brown v. Board of Educ. of Topeka, Kansas Year 1803 1896 1954 Issue and Importance Gave Supreme Court power of judicial review. Established that blacks and whites can be separate and equal (segregation). Established that separation of blacks and whites (segregation) is illegal. (Overturns or reverses the 1896 Plessy decision)

Important Court Cases p.125 Court Case Gideon v. Wainwright Miranda v. Arizona Bush v. Gore Year 1963 1966 2000 Issue and Importance You have a right to counsel (a lawyer) for all felonies. When arrested, you have the right to know all of your rights, such as the right to have a lawyer or to remain silent (not self-incriminate) Florida could not do anymore vote re-counts, the popular vote in Florida was won by George W. Bush defeating Al Gore in the Presidential election.

Nixon Year 1974 Issue and Importance President Nixon must release the White House tape recordings because due process and justice are more important than the President’s executive privilege. The President must obey the court’s order (and the law). Pres. Nixon with transcripts of tape recordings.

Kuhlmeier Year 1968 1964 1987 Issue and Importance Students do have free speech and other rights (within certain limits) Students or minors do have 5 th and 6 th amendment rights because of the 14 th amendment equal protection clause. School officials may censor some things in the school newspaper as long as it serves a purpose.
