2 Building the CPR When the railway was being built in the 1800s, many Chinese men were hired to do the work.

3 Dangerous Work They were given the most dangerous jobs including placing explosives, and were paid significantly less than other workers

4 After the Railway After the railway was built, Chinese Canadians were treated with discrimination. They were charged a “head tax” of $50 per person which many couldn’t afford

5 The “Chinese Exclusion Act” was a government law which prevented them from bringing their wives and children to Canada

6 They say that for every mile of the railroad, there is one dead Chinese worker
