Learning Target: Human Population Growth Humans: Where do we go from here? ?

I Can … Identify factors that have contributed to exponential human world population growth. Humans: Where do we go from here? I Will … Discuss how humans modify their ecosystems and use technology to advance population growth. Human Population Growth

Humans: Where do we go from here? Human Population Growth >7,000,000,000

The growing human population exerts pressure on Earth’s natural resources. Nonrenewable resources: Used faster than can be replaced. e.g. Oil, coal, natural gas, nuclear Renewable resources: Not easily used up and replenish over time (replaced). e.g. Sun, wind, water Global Atmospheric Concentration of CO 2

Ecological footprint: Amount of land necessary to produce and maintain enough food, water, shelter, energy, and waste per person. Several factors affect the size of the ecological footprint. amount and efficiency of resource use amount and toxicity of waste produced

Humans: Where do we go from here? Human Population Growth

The modern human population has existed for a little more than 500,000 years. About 10,000 years ago, the total population was about 3 million people, most of them hunters and gatherers. The development of agriculture (the raising of crops and animals for human use) allowed for permanent settlements/cities to begin. Explain how the development of agriculture impacted the human population. Humans: Where do we go from here?

Human Population Growth Humans: Where do we go from here? Our population reached 1 billion (1,000,000,000) in 1840. The Industrial Revolution began in the late 1700’s. What kinds of changes did this bring about that contributed to a further increase in the human population?

Human Population Growth Humans: Where do we go from here? In 1927 the human world population reached 2 Billion (2,000,000,000). During the 20 th century the human population experienced a great exponential growth and reached 6 Billion (6,000,000,000) during October 1999 and then reached 7 Billion in the very early 21 st century during October 2011. The Medical Revolution started in the mid to late 1800s and the first antibiotic was discovered in the early 1900s. How have advances in medical treatment and antiseptic surgical techniques impacted the human population?

Human Population Growth Humans: Where do we go from here? Of all of the factors that have contributed to increasing the human population; What factor do you believe has had the greatest impact on promoting the exponential growth pattern of humans? Fully explain your answer.
