1 Rotate tape diagrams vertically (to create bar graphs).
Module 6 Lesson 2 Rotate tape diagrams vertically (to create bar graphs).

2 Group Counting Now let’s count by 8s to 80! 80 64
Here is the start of a number line. What number is halfway between 0 and 16? 48 What number is halfway between 16 and 32? 8 24 What number is halfway between 32 and 48? 40 32 What number is halfway between 48 and 64? 56 What number is halfway between 64 and 80? 16 72 Now let’s count by 8s to 80!

3 Group Counting Now let’s count by 7s to 70! 70 63 56
Fill in the missing numbers as we go. 49 42 35 28 21 14 7

4 Group Counting Now let’s count by 6s to 60! 60 54 48
Fill in the missing numbers as we go. 42 36 30 24 18 12 6

5 Group Counting Now let’s count by 9s to 90! 90 81 72
Fill in the missing numbers as we go. 63 54 45 36 27 18 9

6 Read Tape Diagrams 4 28 What is the value of the tape diagram? 7 x 4 = 28

7 Read Tape Diagrams 3 21 What is the value of the tape diagram? 7 x 3 = 21

8 Read Tape Diagrams 7 49 What is the value of the tape diagram? 7 x 7 = 49

9 Read Tape Diagrams 8 8 8 A B 4 x 8 = 32 7 x 8 = 56
What is the value of each unit in these tape diagrams? Write a multiplication sentence for the value of diagram A: 4 x 8 = 32 Write a multiplication sentence for the value of diagram A: 7 x 8 = 56

10 Read Tape Diagrams 8 8 A B 11 x 8 = 88 32 + 56 = 88 7 – 4 = 3
Write an equation for the value of BOTH tape diagrams: 11 x 8 = 88 = 88 How many more units of 8 are in diagram B? 7 – 4 = 3 Write and equation showing the the difference in the value of the tape diagrams: 56 – 32 = 24

11 Problem of the Day Tamsyn played in three basketball games. She scored 12 points in Game 1, 8 points in Game 2, and 16 points in Game 3. Each basket was worth 2 points. She uses tape diagrams to represent the points scored in each game. On your whiteboard, draw a tape diagram for each game. 2 Game 1 2 Game 2 Game 3 2 How many baskets did Tamsyn make in total? 18 baskets What was her score for all three games? 36 points

12 Concept Development How are these vertical tape diagram similar to the picture graph you made yesterday? They both show data They both use units of 2 Both use units are greater than 1

13 Concept Development How are these vertical tape diagram different from the picture graph you made yesterday? The tape diagrams are connected. The picture graphs weren’t connected. The tape diagrams label the unit in each box. The picture graph labeled the unit on the bottom of the graph.

14 Concept Development When we create graphs there are a few things that should always be included. These are shown on the right. Today we are going to talk about some of these things.

15 Concept Development A TITLE goes at the top of the graph and tells what the graph is about, the same way a book title tells what a book is about. What shall we call our graph? Points Tamsyn Scored We should also use LABELS for each axis (X and Y) to show what information is being shown. What label should we use for the X-axis (across)? What label should we use for the Y-axis (up)? Points Scored Games Played

16 Interval means the value of each bar or box going up.
Concept Development Two other important items used when we create graphs are interval and scale. Interval means the value of each bar or box going up. Scale means that we use the same amount of vertical space for each interval.

17 Concept Development What if I want to change the INTERVAL of this graph so that each box shows 4 points. How would that change the graph? We will not need as many boxes because each box or interval is worth more points. How many boxes will we need for game 1? Game 2? Game 3? Points Tamsyn Scored Points Scored Games Played

18 Concept Development Yes!
Does this graph still show the same data from the basketball games? Yes! The graph still shows Tamsyn scored a total of 36 points, but we used a larger INTERVAL so we have fewer boxes going up. Points Tamsyn Scored Points Scored Games Played

19 Concept Development What if Tamsyn had only scored 12 points in game three. How would I change the graph? I would only need three boxes to show her 12 points. Points Tamsyn Scored Points Scored Games Played

20 Concept Development We can now use the graph to answer questions about Tamsyn’s games: How many more points did Tamsyn score in game 3 than in game 1? How many points were scored in games 2 and 3 combined? Points Tamsyn Scored Points Scored Games Played

21 Concept Development Challenge Question! What if … Tamsyn scored 13 points in game 3. How would we show that on the graph? We would need to show ¼ of a box! If 1 box = 4 points, ¼ box = 1 point! Points Tamsyn Scored Points Scored Games Played

22 Problem Set!
