Content Objective: Students will meet with their literature circle group to discuss the book and complete the weekly group work packet. Language Objective: Students will discuss their books in groups in order to clarify and deepen each others understanding of the text. They will use their reading and Post-It notes to complete the group work packet.

Culture can be defined by several factors: o Gender o Religion o Ethnicity o Social status/ economic situation o Age (youth culture) o Physical environment/setting (time and place) o Social norms/expectations of the time o Anything else?

Agenda: PURPOSE: The purpose of this task is to answer the following essential question: How does the cultural context of a work of literature impact the choices characters make? TASK: For this assignment, you will create a claim to answer the essential question above by annotating for cultural contexts within your literature circle book and researching the most relevant cultural contexts. You will support your claim by analyzing the connection between evidence from your group’s literature circle text and evidence from THREE informational sources found through research. Then, as a group, you will present this information to the class in the form of an oral presentation. The reasons you select for your claim should be based on ONE of the following options: 1. THREE cultural contexts that affect character choices 2. THREE elements of ONE cultural context that affect character choices (this is the more challenging option) Your group’s completion of this task will be assisted by: - Weekly post-it annotations - Weekly literature circle group meetings - Dialectical Journal entry - Guidance on how to effectively conduct research, organize a presentation, and deliver an oral presentation Summative Assessment : Contextualizing Character Choice Through Cultural Perspectives

Description of Literature Circle Roles Discussion Director: leads the discussion and ensures that all group members share in the the day’s discussion Groups of 5 will have two discussion directors. Recorder: completes any worksheets/handouts assigned by recording the ideas of the group Timekeeper: manages the time for each task ensuring that each task is completed in the time allotted Secretary: ensures that all handouts are in the folder and that the folder is returned to the teacher at the end of the period; reminds group of next week’s roles and reading deadline. Note: Roles/responsibilities will rotate on a weekly basis.

Agenda: REQUIRED COMPONENTS – See calendar on back of this page which outlines due dates: Outline of Presentation & Works Cited Page – 10 formative points DUE JUNE 1 ST State your claim that includes three reasons Provide evidence from your literature circle text and an informational text for each reason Analyze the connection between these two pieces of evidence for each reason Provide a counterclaim for TWO of your three reasons Include a MLA Works Cited Page that lists the FOUR sources you are using for this presentation Oral Presentation – 30 summative points DUE JUNE 8 TH You are encouraged to create a Powerpoint presentation for this, but if you believe you have another method of presentation that would be more effective, please see your teacher for guidance. The presentation should reflect a thoughtful awareness of the most effective and interesting ways to communicate meaning. Group members should have equal responsibilities for verbally presenting information to the class. Final Outline of Presentation – 70 summative points DUE JUNE 8 TH Provide a copy of your slides and/or speaking notes that identify who was responsible for sharing each part. This should be a revised, polished version of your original outline. Final Reflection – 20 summative points DUE JUNE 11 TH - 12 TH The format and final due date for this will be provided for you in June. Summative Assessment:
