1. Is free speech becoming more limited in America? John Stossel considers that in his recent Fox News hour, "Censored in America." Words can wound, so should we have increased limits around free speech? Why or why not? Does free speech have a special role in a free society? http://stosselintheclassroom.org/essay_contest/watch_video/ "Censored in America" says that students are sometimes kept away from words and ideas they might find disturbing. What do you think? Are there areas in society today where we should allow more free speech? Are there areas where we should restrict free speech? Please write a 600-900 word essay on this topic. You should include your own examples of free speech controversies, and you must include at least one reference to the TV special or Stossel's book, "No They Can't."

2. The contest… This writing prompt is the topic for a writing contest sponsored by journalist John Stossel. Our top 5-10 entries will be submitted to the national contest. We will also hold a contest on our team. One winner will be chosen from each group (A, B, C, and D). In addition, 3-5 “wildcard” winners will also be chosen. Number of wildcards depends on the number of quality entries. Winners will be determined by student votes and comments. Teacher will have the final say. Winners will receive a pizza party the last week before mid-winter break.

3. Grading Rubric Introduction which includes strong hook and thesis (15 points). Minimum of 500 words, written in standard English, formatted correctly: typed, 14-point, Times New Roman, double spaced, 1-inch margins. (20 points). A counterclaim, in which you anticipate and address your opponents’ objections (10 points). A conclusion in which you summarize your argument (10 points). CUPS (15 points). Your own example(s) of free speech controversies (10 points). At least one reference to the TV news special we watched in class (10 points). Turned in ON TIME, via Kidblog (10 points).
