Harmonisation activity: Proposal for Standard methods Presented by Sandra Poikane Joint Research Centre Institute for Environment and Sustainability

Mandate for ECOSTAT 2010 - 2012  Task 2 : Harmonisation/Standardization  Proposal with methods for amendment of Annex V 1.3.6 of the Directive (2011)

Background: WFD Annex V 1.3.6 Standards for monitoring of quality elements: Methods used for the monitoring shall conform to the international standards listed below …

List of Standard methods ?  Only Macroinvertebrate sampling  1994-1999  Outdated or will be outdated soon

List of Standard methods ?  Urgent need to revise the list !  Incomplete and outdated

How to revise the list ?  Technical adaptations – Art.20 ,,, section 1.3.6 of Annex V may be adapted to scientific and technical progress in accordance with the procedures laid down in Article 21

CEN: Information on methods Title, contents, scope ECOSTAT WG leads Initial proposal Consultation with BQE and GIG leads Interim proposal Consultation with ECOSTAT Final proposal

CEN: Information on methods Title, scope ECOSTAT WG leads Initial proposal Consultation with BQE and GIG leads Interim proposal Consultation with ECOSTAT Final proposal  December 2011  January 2011  March 2011  April 2011

 What information we need for choosing the standards ?  At this moment available: –Title –Contents –Scope

Guidance on the selection of sampling methods and devices for benthic macroinvertebrates in freshwaters  This document describes the selection of sampling devices and methods used to evaluate benthic macroinvertebrate populations in freshwaters (rivers, canals, lakes and reservoirs).  The devices and methods considered in this standard are suitable for sampling all major components of the benthic assemblage. They are not suitable for sampling meio-fauna.

Water quality – Guidance standard for surveying of aquatic macrophytes in running waters  Topic of guidance This guidance defines a method for surveying aquatic macrophytes in rivers for assessing ecological status of river reaches  Water category relevance Rivers, including side channels and oxbows  Type data collected Semi-quantitative data based on a descriptor scale with visual estimates of species composition and abundance suitable for classification and monitoring of environmental conditions
