REPORTED SPEECH (2 ND CASE) It’s not always necessary to change the verb in reported speech. If you report something and the situation hasn’t changed, you don’t need to change the verb to the past, e.g.: TomYou (The situation hasn’t changed. Tom’s job is still interesting.) “My new job is very interesting” Tom said his new job is very interesting.
4
AnnYou (The situation hasn’t changed. Ann still wants to go) You can also change the verb to the past: -Tom said his new job was interesting. -Ann said she wanted to go to South America the following year. Ann said she wants to go to South America next year. “I want to go to South America next year”
5
But if you report a finished situation, you must use a past verb, e.g.: Paul left the room suddenly. He said he had to go.
6
You need to use a past form when there is a difference between what was said and what is really true, for example: You met Peter a few days ago. He said: “Joe is in the hospital.” (direct speech). Later that day you meet Joe in the street. You say: “I didn’t expect to see you, Joe. Peter said you were in the hospital.” Peter You Joe is in the hospital. Peter said you were in the hospital
