Science Word of the Week combustion-the reacting of oxygen with a fuel like gasoline which then releases energy in the form of heat and sometimes light-as in fireworks. Since combustion of glucose takes place in the cell, catalysts assist in enabling this reaction to happen at a temperature that will not injure the cell. The burning of wood in a campfire is a combustion reaction as is the burning of fuel in a car. Both release energy, carbon-based gases like CO2, CO, and water vapor as by- products.
