3-09-11, 3-10-11 IN – Why do our bodies go through the process of Meiosis? – What would happen if Meiosis did not happen?
2
3-09-11, 3-10-11 Through – Meiosis – Can you sort it out? Part A – Notes OUT – Worksheet from Monday OUT – Worksheet from Monday

3. Use the letters provided and press them gently into clay. – C= cream eye c= tan eye – W= white wingw=spotted wing – Eye color on long chromosome and Wing color on short chromosome 4. Place your chromosome models in the large circle at the top of your sheet of paper You can: 1. Use the clay again 2. Create a flipchart 3. Write a written explanation of Meiosis using these alleles
4
7. Answer the following questions: A. In your model, what is the genotype of each sperm for eye color and wing color? B. What other genotypes are possible? C. At what point would you change how you positioned your chromosome models to obtain the other possible genotypes?
5
Meiosis practice Let’s practice Meiosis using the Promethean board

Can you sort it out? Gregor Mendel – Father of Genetics – Monk living in a monestery in Europe 150 years ago – Used pea plants to discover traits and inherited patterns – Basic genetics(NO idea about genes or DNA)
7
NOTES: Monohybrid cross -- a genetic cross between two individuals differing in one allele(straight ears vs. floppy ears) Punnett Square -- a genetic chart used to make predictions of future offspring based on the genotype of two parents
8
Tt Punnett Square examples Homozygous dominant X Homozygous recessive Pea plant alleles T=tall t=short Probability --- 100% offspring are tall T t

Homozygous dominant X Heterozygous Pea plant alleles W=wrinkled seed w=smooth seed Probability --- 100% wrinkled seed WW Ww W W Ww Ww
