3 Introduction Heat exhaustion and heatstroke are two heat-related health conditions. If they're not quickly treated, they can both be very serious. The symptoms usually include very hot skin that feels ‘flushed’, heavy sweating, dizziness and nausea Due to the heat wave alerts in the UK, more and more people were looking at heatstroke content. Resting in a cool place with plenty of fluids is the best way to deal with heatstroke while awaiting medical attention. July 2013 finished in the top three sunniest and warmest since records began

4 Webtrends Visits to heatstroke content were significantly higher this July than they have been in the previous two years. During July 2013 visits to heatstroke pages were over 300% higher than those recorded the previous year. A contributing factor was the UK heatwave where July temperatures reached an average of 17°C. This was the third hottest mean temperature record for the month since records began. 5 5 Webtrends 2013 has seen a substantial rise in overall NHS Choices visits, with visits between May – July being 35.35% higher than those recorded the previous year. However, the increase in visits to heatstroke content in July 2013, has seen the percentage of NHS Choices traffic made up by heatstroke content rise from 0.60% in June 2012 to 2.42% in July 2013.

6 Webtrends The heatstroke symptoms and introduction pages were the most visited in the topic with over 320,000 combined visits in July 2013.

7 External Influences Visits to heatstroke related content followed the pattern of the temperatures for July, with the highest spikes in visits corresponding to where the maximum temperatures were recorded. The two biggest spikes in traffic also coincided with heat-wave news being posted on the MET office website and BBC.co.uk. Both pages featured links to heat-wave advice on NHS Choices.

8 Splunk: Geographical Data With the south east seeing some of the hottest temperatures during the UK heat wave, it fits that London was the top location in terms of searches to heatstroke pages. The capital dominated much of early July, but fell back in line with the rest of the top 5 by the end of the month.

9 Splunk: Geographical Data Manchester had the largest contingent of people accessing heatstroke content as a % of the population of the city. This could have been boosted in part by Manchester City Council featuring a story on what to do with heatstroke and the symptoms of heatstroke.
