What’s the Matter? Science Lesson by Mrs. Watson

What is it? Matter is anything that: 1.Has mass, and 2.Takes up space.

Element An element is matter made up of only one “ingredient”. All of the elements are listed in a diagram called the Periodic Table. Most elements are made in nature. Some examples of elements are: hydrogen, oxygen, & carbon.

Two or More “Ingredients” Together Compound 2 or more ingredients Can not be easily separated Examples include cake, water, a piece of wood, a sheet of paper Mixture 2 or more ingredients Can EASILY be separated Examples include a salad, trail mix, cereal in milk, a bag of M & M’s

Observable Properties Properties are characteristics we use to identify something. Observable means that we can discover these properties by either using our senses or through measuring. Observable properties include: color, texture, size, weight, taste, smell, and sound.
