Reading a Nutrition Label
21
Next Step Circle all the foods that you eat 4-5 times per week, then answer questions 1-2 (Evaluating your Diet)
22
The Importance of Protein You need foods containing protein in your diet to help you build and maintain strong muscles, hair, and nails.
23
The Importance of Carbohydrates Smaller carbohydrates are known as sugars. You also need some sugar to provide you with energy during the day Too much sugar in your diet can cause cavities, weight gain, and diabetes Large, complex carbohydrates are known as starches. You need starches to provide you with energy during the day Too much starch can cause weight gain though because the extra carbohydrates are eventually converted into lipids (fats)
24
The Importance of Lipids Healthy lipids are unsaturated fats. You need foods containing unsaturated fat in your diet to help your heart and brain function well. Unhealthy lipids are saturated fats. You should have very little saturated fat in your diet Too much saturated fat can cause weight gain and increase your risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, and cancer
25
Example Michael is finding that he is extremely tired after school and has no energy left for football practice. Which macromolecule would you recommend that he eats at lunch to provide him with the energy his body needs for practice?
26
Next Step Working with a partner, volume 1 voice: Answer the Review Questions (1-8) Then answer the Critical-Thinking Questions (1-5)
27
Closure Questions Brittany makes it a point to eat 3 candy bars a day and at least one bag of hot chips. Which macromolecule group are these foods a part of? What diseases/ health problems is she at risk for if she continues this behavior across a span of time?
