What is a Feed Additive? Used in Animal Rations in small quantities. Improve/Stimulate performance in: Feed efficiency Faster weight gain Better Health Better Production (Milk, Eggs, Wool) Not usually considered nutrients

What is a Hormone Implant? Pelleted synthetic, or natural hormones Placed under the skin or muscle Improve rate of gain, or feed efficiency Can also be feed additive

Why use Feed Additives, and Hormone Implants? Performance Stimulants Increase Profits Can use antibiotics at a lower level than to treat sick animals Can you think of a reason not to do this?

Why use Feed Additives, and Hormone Implants? Disease Prevention Regulated by FDA (any feed containing any drug must be labeled as “medicated”.
