Algebra 2a September 13, 2007 Chapter Five review
2
Rules for exponents Product Rule a m * a n = a m+n Quotient Rule a m /a n = a m-n
3
More rules for exponents Product-Power Rules (ab) x = a x b x Quotient-Power Rules (a/b) y = a y /b y Power Rule (a x ) y = a xy
4
Order of Operations Remember to following the order of operations! Parentheses Exponents Multiplication Division Addition Subtraction Make sure to use parentheses when appropriate on the calculator.
5
Types of Polynomials and their degrees 1 term = monomial 2 terms = binomial 3 terms = trinomial degree = the highest exponent Descending form Order the terms, starting with the highest exponent (power)
6
Adding polynomials Add using the vertical method x+2 +x 2 +x-1 Add using parenthesis (x-2)+(x 2 -4) Make sure to combine like terms!
7
Subtracting polynomials Use the vertical method x 2 +10x-1 - -5x+6 Use parentheses (2x-2)-(3x-5) Remember the rules about subtracting negatives!
8
Finding the product of a monomial and a polynomial. Use the distributive property to multiply each term in the polynomial by the monomial. 2(x-3) 2x-6
9
Finding the product of two polynomials. Use the distributive property. Use FOIL (binomials only) Use completing the square. Use the vertical method.
10
Squaring binomials and the difference of two squares To square a binomial: 1. square the first term 2. multiply the two terms together and multiply by two 3. square the last term Find the product two binomials that differ only in sign: (a-b)(a+b) 1. Square the first term 2. Square the second term 3. Connect the two with a minus
