1 Spring Term Books- Julia Donaldson Reception Class Language, Literacy and Communication This term we will be reinforcing the 42 sounds Introduced last term. We will continue practising blending the sounds to read and write simple words. This term we will be looking at all kinds of Books. We will be sharing our favourite books, looking at different genres and investigating materials to make a book for a dinosaur. We will continue to send reading books and flashcards home. As the children become ready we will send home books for them to read rather than to have read to them. Reading books will continue to be changed on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday if needed. Mathematical Development The children will take part in daily number activities. They will practise counting, ordering and recognising numbers to 20 and beyond We will also continue to practise writing numbers to 20 without a copy We will be focusing on calculating one/ two more and one/two less and encouraging children to start forming written sums. We will also be talking about time and months of the year linked with the children’s birthdays. We will continue to use the language of measure when comparing size and weight and use non-standard units to measure the length, height and weight of objects. In the second half of the term we will be preparing for our Reception school fayre. The children will be making, pricing and selling goods made in Reception to raise money for the ‘family picnic’ held at the end of the year. Knowledge and Understanding of the World This term we will be looking at different materials and their properties. We will be testing different materials and seeing what materials and using them to make books for different purposes. We will also be using the school grounds to look at the changes taking place during Winter The children will have daily access to the computers and other ICT equipment in the class including iPad, CD players, digital cameras, easi- speak microphone, tuft cam and beebots. Creative Development The children will experience using a wide variety of art materials in focused activities and during free play. We will be sketching trees to look at line, shape and form before creating trees using different mediums and also looking at colour mixing for winter sky for our Winter land display. We will be making clay models of Welsh emblems. The children when designing their dinosaur will be creating it on the computer, As we are focusing on books the children will closely look at illustrations and will create their own front cover. Physical Development Your child will need a P.E. kit in school as we regularly change for P.E. sessions The children will continue to develop their fine motor skills, through using a wide variety of small equipment including scissors, pens, beads etc. They will develop their gross motor skills through gaining control of their bodies when using large and small apparatus in P.E. and also when using the outside environment. We will be working with the new Foundation Phase programme called ‘Play to Learn’. This pack develops appropriate P.E. skills and encourages the use of different skills through all areas of the curriculum. Personal and Social Development, Well-Being and Cultural Diversity We will be looking at Easter and how they are celebrated. We will continue to reinforce the school rules and encourage the children to show respect for the classroom equipment, their peers and adults in the class. The children will also be encouraged to take more responsibility for choosing equipment and resources to use inside and outside of the classroom. The children will be encouraged to talk about what they are good at and how they can improve their performance in different areas. The children have set goals which they would like to achieve by half term. Welsh Language Development The teaching staff will use incidental Language throughout the day and the children will be encouraged to respond appropriately. We will also learn traditional Welsh songs and rhymes. The children will play games to help with vocabulary and listen to stories from Fflic a Fflac.

2 Spring Term How you can help Language, Literacy and Communication Share books and stories with your child. Practise letter sounds and letter formation in your child’s sound book. Practise writing their names at home encouraging the your child to form all letters correctly. Encourage your child to read and discuss their home reading book on a regular basis. Practise reading flashcard words sent home Mathematical Development Link times of day to familiar activities. Allow your child to use money when shopping. Practise counting, recognising and writing numbers to 20 and beyond, as appropriate. Knowledge and Understanding of the World Look at different materials and what they are used for. Talk about the effects Winter has on the environment. Creative Development Sing songs and Nursery Rhymes at home. Encourage your child to sing the songs s/he is learning in school. Physical Development Encourage your child to be physically active. Use a range of equipment for drawing and cutting. Make sure your child has a P.E. kit in school. Personal and Social Development, Well-Being and Cultural Diversity Encourage your child to talk about what they are good at and to set simple goals for themselves that can be achieved in a short period of time. Welsh Language Development Ask your child to tell you some of the words/songs they are learning in school.
