Microsoft Project – Tutorial 3 Creating a Report open LAN-3 from the tutorials folder save the file as LAN-3-your initials click Reports > Reports double-click Overview then Top-Level Tasks close this preview and open Critical Tasks

Microsoft Project – Tutorial 3 Critical Path and Critical Tasks Critical Tasks must be completed as scheduled to complete the Project on time the Critical Path is the series of Critical Tasks the Critical Path changes if tasks are completed ahead of or behind schedule

Microsoft Project – Tutorial 3 Filtering Tasks and Information filtering temporarily hides some tasks so that only tasks that you are interested in are displayed filters are available on the Filter list arrow on the Formatting Toolbar click the Filter list arrow and choose Critical only Summary Tasks and critical tasks are shown

Microsoft Project – Tutorial 3 Filtering Tasks and Information filters are available in any view, but independently open the View bar if you do not see it click the Network Diagram button filter this view for Summary Tasks return to the Gantt View try filtering for the date range from 9/1/2007 to 9/15/2007

Microsoft Project – Tutorial 3 using the AutoFilter similar to the autofilter in Excel click the AutoFilter button on the Formatting Toolbar list arrows will appear above each column make sure that there are no current filters applied click on the filter arrow on the Start column and choose Mon 8/6/07 now click the filter list arrow on the Formatting Toolbar and click Critical you can also customize filters; choose custom from the duration autofilter and experiment turn off all filters

Microsoft Project – Tutorial 3 Customizing (Formatting) the Gantt Chart click the Gantt Chart Wizard button on the Formatting toolbar reformat the Gantt Chart using this wizard go to Format > Bar Styles change the colour and look of your bars you can also format text styles from here you can also format individual items

Microsoft Project – Tutorial 3 Shortening the Critical Path by using Task Information open LAN-3-3 from your Tutorial Folder and save it as LAN-3-3-your initials the LAN must be installed by 10/4/07 open Project>Project Information and notice the current Finish Date filter the view so that only the Critical Tasks are visible reduce the durations for tasks 12 and 13 to 4 days note the change in the Finish Date

Microsoft Project – Tutorial 3 Shortening the Critical Path by modifying Task Dependencies view the two training tasks they are dependent, but could be done concurrently remove the dependency view the Testing sub-tasks link tasks 24 and 27 to establish a dependency

Microsoft Project – Tutorial 3 Shortening the Critical Path by adding negative lag time add a negative lag time of 1 day (-1d) between tasks 12 and 13 as these tasks can overlap note the finish date

Microsoft Project – Tutorial 3 Shortening the Critical Path by changing the type of dependency double-click the link line between tasks 11 and 12 change the dependency to start-to-start (SS) they now start on the same day however task 12 must start one day after task 11 add a lead time of (+)1 day to this dependency
