October 22, 2015 Objective: I will be able to relate the phase changes of water to the kinetic molecular theory of matter. Entry Task: Read “Boiling Oil” on pgs. 90-92 Answer questions 1-2 on pg. 92 Take out student sheet 7.1 Agenda: Lesson 7 – Just a Phase 1)Reflecting Questions 1-7 (Separate sheet of paper) Lesson 7 Online Book

Heating of Water Time VS Temperature Solid to Liquid

Kinetic (moving) Molecular Theory All matter consists of small particles (atoms) All particles are in constant motion If energy is added – particles speed up – Liquid or gas phase (depending on speed) If energy is removed – particles slow down – Liquid or solid (depending on speed) The temperature of an object is a measurement of the energy of it’s moving particles

Vocabulary Melting – Changing from solid to liquid. Caused by adding energy Freezing – Changing from liquid to solid. Caused by removal of energy Boiling – Changing from liquid to gas at a substance’s boiling point. Caused by adding energy Evaporating – Changing from a liquid to gas at liquids surface Condensing – changing from a gas to a liquid
