3 Polk’s Promise The dark horse James K. Polk had won the presidency making a few promises “54⁰ 40⁰ or Fight!” (Settle Oregon Issue) Annex Texas (make it part of country) Take over California and southwest All focused on Manifest Destiny Polk vowed to only serve one term and would expand the nation from coast to coast

4 Texas Texas had been controlled by Spain until Mexico declared independence Texas was called Tejas and the Mexicans that lived there called themselves Tejanos Texas was very attractive for Americans Lots of land Great cotton growing area

5 Americans in Texas Mexico invited Americans to come to Texas More people = more money in the economy Americans would become Mexican citizens Stephen F. Austin lead American settlers into Texas Americans began outnumbering Tejanos and no longer wanted to follow Mexican laws Speaking Spanish Becoming Catholic Mexico threatened to ban slavery

7 Remember the Alamo Tensions rose to the point that American leaders in Texas, Austin and Sam Houston (from TN) planned to split from Mexico Mexico surrounded a Texan mission (church) building called the Alamo The Alamo was attacked and most Americans inside were killed Davy Crockett (Texan who died defending the Alamo)

8 Texas Independence Texas uses the Alamo to fuel the drive for Independence (“Remember the Alamo”), Texans fought back and forced Mexico to give them independence The Lone Star Republic was formed Texas was its own nation Texans wanted to join United States Issue was the balance of free and slave states Polk annexed Texas to the US when he became President

You have 10 minutes to write an introduction and a conclusion paragraph for the essay, using the question below: Using content knowledge and the documents provided, determine how manifest destiny impacted America.
