Mount Athos is a mountain and peninsula in Greece

According to tradition, Virgin Mary, admiring the wild beauty of the place....

So Mount Athos is also called ‘Garden of Virgin Mary’

Greeks call it the "Holy Mountain" (Greek: Άγιον Όρος, Agion Oros)

In the 5th century AD, the first monks came to Mount Athos.

Now there are about 20 monasteries.

The number of daily visitors to Mount Athos is restricted.

They are required to obtain a special entrance permit

The monasteries possess huge deposits of invaluable art treasures

METEORA

Meteora means “suspended in the air”.

It is said that the first people to inhabit Meteora arrived in the 9th Century

They wanted to escape everyday life, they climbed up the cliffs with their bare hands

They settled in small caves and lived on a life of solitude, meeting occasionally to worship and pray.

As time progressed these people grew into a small community and built monasteries.

By the 14th Century served as shelter from Turkish invaders.

Beginning of 19 th century many were destroyed by the army of Ali Pasha.

Now, six monasteries remain and can be visited.
