November 3, 2015 Objective: I will observe what happens when different substances are mixed with water. Entry Task: Read the introduction on page 124 (black & red book) Complete Solubility notes Agenda: Properties of Matter: Lesson 10 1)Getting Started 1-3 2)Procedures 1-10 3)Student Sheet 10.1 Lesson 10 Online Book
2
Mixtures, Solutions, & Solubility Solution: A combination of 2 or more substances that appears to be a single substance. Particles of the mixed substances are evenly distributed. Substances cannot be separated
3
Mixtures, Solutions, & Solubility Solution: Dissolving The process in which particles separate and spread evenly is known as dissolving.
4
Mixtures, Solutions, & Solubility Solution: Dissolving Solute: The substance that is dissolved in a solution ex. Sugar dissolving in water – sugar is a solute Solvent: The substance in which the solute dissolves. ex. Sugar dissolving in water – water is the solvent
5
Mixtures, Solutions, & Solubility Solution: Dissolving Concentration: A measurement of the amount of solute dissolved in a solvent.
6
Mixtures, Solutions, & Solubility Solution: Dissolving Solubility: The amount of a solute needed to make a saturated solution. Expressed in grams/100mL Saturation: The maximum amount of solute a solvent can dissolve
