2 What is Dehydration? Occurs when the body has lost too much fluid and electrolytes Most common in elderly

3 What is Water? A transparent, odorless, tasteless liquid, and a compound of hydrogen and oxygen Water makes up 75% of one’s body weight 3.4 million people die each year from a water related disease

4 How Do We Lose Water? Breathing Humidified air leaves the body Sweat to cool the body Urinate or have a bowel movement to rid the body of waste products.

5 Causes of Dehydration Diarrhea Diabetes Vomiting Sweating Burns Inability to drink fluids

6 Signs & Symptoms Thirst Dry mouth, dry tongue with thick saliva Headaches Difficulty passing urine or reduced amounts that are dark yellow Dizziness that becomes worse on standing Weakness Sleepiness Urinary tract infections Cramping in arms or legs Crying with no or few tears Dry, warm skin Flushed face Fever Irritability Malaise Constipation

7 Dehydration Treatments Drinking lots of fluids Consuming foods and drinks with sodium and potassium to restore electrolyte balance Severe dehydration is a medical emergency and should be treated at the hospital Replenishment of water and electrolytes through intravenous therapy or oral rehydration therapy

8 Don’t Like Plain Water? Add lemon slices Cucumber slices Strawberry slices Orange slices Coconut water ANY kind of fruit that you like to give your water a little bit of flavor! Try to put fruit into a pitcher of water and put it into your refrigerator to let the fruit taste settle and drink it frequently throughout the day. Drink up to 70oz a day
