On Target? Do this on your Warm Up worksheet! What does “conducts electricity” mean? What are some examples of things that conduct electricity?
2
For today 1.Warmup 2.Conductivity vs Insulator 3.Conductivity Meters 4.Vocab 5.Properties Lab Objective: I can test properties of different substances in order to categorize these substances by recording accurate data throughout this lab activity.
3
GOAL of lab 1.To practice testing properties of different substances 2.Using those macroscopic observations to determine what is happening on the microscopic level.
4
What is a conductor vs Insulator? Conductor: electricity flows easily (ex. Copper) Insulator: electricity does not flow easily (ex. plastic)
5
Conductivity Meter power source probes On/off switch LED lights Sketch this.
6
Using a conductivity meter: The probes are the ONLY part that should touch liquid. The blue part should never get wet. Always turn the meter OFF after use. Rinse the probes with distilled water after each use.
7
How we can test if something conducts electricity? Conductivity meter What objects do you have that might conduct electricity? Take them out and we can test some of them
8
Imagine……
9
Vocabulary=What do these mean? Matter Microscopic Macroscopic Physical property Compound Conductivity Chemical Formula Melting point Soluble
10
ON WHITEBOARD How will you test the properties? Property SUGAR ( C 12 H 22 O 11 ) Appearance Hardness Conductivity SOLID Soluble in water Conductivity in WATER Melting point Bond Type
11
DO NOT WRITE! How will you test the properties? Property SUGAR Appearance What it looks like Hardness Soft, powder, crystals, etc. Conductivity SOLID Conductivity meter: Low, Medium, High Soluble in water Put in water and stir: Yes, no, maybe? Conductivity in WATER Conductivity meter: Low, Medium, High Melting point Flame test: put over burner and look for when it melts Bond type NOT observable but the other properties are good clues.
