DESCRIPTION  Grave’s disease is an immune system disorder that results in the overproduction of thyroid hormones,  Grave’s disease is a common cause.  Grave’s disease can be wide ranging and significantly influence your overall well-being.  Grave’s disease may affect anyone, it’s more common among women and before the age of 40.

3. CAUSE  Grave’s disease is caused by a malfunction in the body’s disease – fighting immune system.  The body produces an antibody t part of the cells in the thyroid gland, a hormone producing gland in the neck.  The antibody for Grave’s disease,(TRAb), Acts like the regulatory pituitary hormone.

4. SYMPTOMS  Anxiety and irritability  Enlargement of your thyroid gland  Rapid or irregular heartbeat  Weight loss, despite normal eating habits  Thick, red skin usually on the shins or tops of the feet  Change in menstrual cycles  Bulging eyes

5. TREATMENT/CURES  Radioactive Iodine Therapy : When you take radioactive Iodine by mouth and because of this your thyroid needs to produce hormones. This causes your thyroid gland to shrink and symptoms seem to stop within weeks  Anti-thyroid medications: These medications interfere with the thyroid’s use Iodine to produce hormones.  Surgery : removing all or part of your thyroid is an option. After the surgery you will most likely need treatment to supply your body with the right amount of thyroid hormones.
