Essential Questions What is a prime number? How is it determined? What is a composite number? How is it determined? Why is it important to know about prime and composite numbers? Which number is special? How is different from other numbers?

Essential Vocabulary What is a composite number? –It’s a number with more than 2 factors. Let’s look at an example: Is 24 a composite number? 24 = 1 x 24 24 = 2 x 12 24 = 3 x 8 24 = 4 x 6 24 is a composite number. The factors of 24 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24. 24 has more than 2 factors!

Essential Vocabulary What is a prime number? –It’s a number with EXACTLY 2 factors. –A number that can only be divided evenly by itself and one. Let’s look at an example: Is 5 a prime number? 5 = 5 x 1 5 is a prime number. The factors of 5 are 1 and 5 5 has EXACTLY 2 factors!

The number 1! Now, let’s talk about the number. The number 1 is a special number because it’s not prime or composite. SPECIAL Think about it and be ready to share: WHY is the number 1 neither prime or composite?
