1
Population Q.1 Densities The measures of Density help geographers to describe the distribution of comparison to available resources.
2
Arithmetic Density Total # of people divided by total land area AKA Population Density Density varies even within a country…some areas are more condensed while others are sparsely populated. Enables geographers to compare the # of people trying to live in a given piece of land in different regions of the world
3
Find the Arithmetic Density Country 1:150 million people and 6 million square miles Country 2: 380 million people and 6 million square miles Country 3: 800 million people and 60 million square miles. Which country is more sparsely populated?
4
Physiological density # of people supported by arable land High density the greater pressure that people may place on the land to produce food Gives insight to the relationship between size of a population and resources
5
Comparing Physiological and Population density Helps understand the capacity of the land to yield enough food for the needs of the people.
6
Agricultural Density Ration of the # of farmers to the amount of arable land. helps account for economic conditions MDC’s have a lower Ag. density
