Learning Objectives: to be able to define and calculate population density To be able to explain why there is a link between environmental factors and population density

Population Density Population density = the number of people area Plotting population density is a useful way to show how crowded an area is. It measures the number of people living in a square kilometre.

China Population = 1 185 000 000 Area = 9 326 410 sq. km. Calculate the population density Population density = 127 people per sq. km.

USA Population = 263 563 000 Area = 7 665 222 sq. km. Calculate the population density Population density = 28 people per sq. km.

Where are the people? Activity 2: -Create a key and shade in the continents in relation to their density. -Use the map on page 231 (green) to add annotations to your map -ANSWER: -Describe the relationship between population density and the percentage of the world population. Use data in your answer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9dFy6xBOBM&safe=active

Homework: Due in next week Carry out research with evidence to support your answer to this question ‘How and why has the population distribution of the planet changed over time?’ Use named location, population figures and dates. Maximum a page! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWc5IVf2Du4&safe=active

Homework: 1. Using an atlas and your own research decide whether these locations are dense or sparse and explain why. LocationHigh or sparse densityReason 1.Amazon Basin 2.East Coast of USA 3.Canada 4.East Cost of China 5.Himalayas 6.Bolivia 7.Sahara 8.Singapore 9.Japan 2. ‘How and why has the population distribution of the planet changed over time?’ Use named location, population figures and dates. Maximum a page!

Activity 4 In full sentences….. Explain why there is a link between environmental factors and population density? Nb use the answers from the card sort to help in your thinking!

Social & Economic reasons for population distribution People live where their needs are met e.g. people live where they can grow crops! Desert areas attract people for raw materials e.g. oil London is a capital city, a centre for administration and a centre of commerce. MEDC Population densities are higher in urban compared to rural areas. This is not the case in some LEDC’s

Extension On an outline map of the world, shade the areas that are most suitable for people to live. Use an atlas to find additional information, i.e. climate and relief. Write a description of your map and explain how you decided on your areas.
