2 Why IslandWood? Students gain confidence and self- knowledge while practicing teamwork skills Students increase their sense of environmental stewardship while learning about environmental systems, the impact of humans on the environment, and the interconnectedness of natural communities Students are empowered to become responsible community citizens.

3 School Overnight Program  Classes (4 th, 5 th or 6 th grades) spend four days at IslandWood doing project-based learning and field research, on the 255 acre forested campus  Students engage in projects that integrate technology and the arts with science  Promotes community building with evening activities and communal living

4 School-Community Partnership  IslandWood staff visits your classroom before and after the overnight trip to answer questions, get to know students, and create a connection to the community  Professional Development Opportunities for teachers to help transition IslandWood learning to the classroom and to implement a service learning project

5 Make a Difference Project  Students use their experiences from IslandWood to make a difference in their communities  Helps students transfer their IslandWood experiences back to their local communities  Teachers integrate skills and knowledge from IslandWood into classroom learning  Inspires environmental stewardship in students

6 Homewaters Project Partnership between students, communities and IslandWood to explore the interdependence of people and nature in Seattle. IslandWood provides training and field support to connect school science curriculum to watersheds and ecosystems within students’ communities

7 IslandWood Affordability  Overnight Program Scholarships Available If, the school has a high percentage of students who qualify for free/reduced lunches If, the school does not regularly participate in an annual residential environmental education program If the the school has a student population that is culturally and/or economically diverse
