there Collocations There are is followed by numbers, amounts, quantities, e.g. lots of, a few, hundreds, some, two, many etc. e.g. There were hundreds of people at the airport. Thereis /are is often followed by impersonal pronouns: no one, nothing, someone, anyone, anything. e.g. We called by, but there was nobody home.
