3 Types of Persuasion: Ethos, Logos, Pathos RHETORICAL STRATEGIES: Rhetoric (n) - the art of speaking or writing effectively or persuasively What does it mean to persuade? (verb) to convince by appealing to reason or understanding Ethos: THINK OF THE WORD ETHICS Refers to the trustworthiness of the speaker/writer If you trust the speaker/author, you are more likely to listen to what he or she has to say Based on a writer’s tone What it is: Personal Appeal How it Works: Based on the persona of the writer

3 Types of Persuasion: Ethos, Logos, Pathos Logos: THINK OF THE WORD LOGIC Logos refers to any attempt to appeal to the intellect; the general meaning of "logical argument." “You’re a smart person, so I know you’ll want to buy my product” Academic arguments rely more on logos. Why? Can also be the facts and statistics used to help support the argument. 3 Types of Persuasion: Ethos, Logos, Pathos Pathos: THINK OF THE WORD, PATHETIC (emotions) Pathos is related to the words pathetic, sympathy, and empathy. Whenever you accept any claim based on how it makes you feel without fully analyzing the rationale behind the claim, you are acting on pathos. Often includes vivid and emotional language, and sensory details What it is: Emotional Appeal How it Works: Tugs at the feelings of the audience
