EIS February 2016 No Chinese Wall – but we build bridges and open windows
3
Challenges Ideology (both in high schools and TEIs) of education as job creation, rather than a social good; Performativity (in terms of measured results) as the goal for education; The social awareness of teachers who have not experienced citizenship education in practice in the TEIs; The tokenism of participation/democracy/voice and agency within the system; Consequence is a breach of trust; We surmise that it is good to have citizenship in curriculums – but how do we know it is better? Hearts and minds of educators – convincing evidence that it is a benefit
4
Possible Responses? Reaffirming creative thinkers and social good as key aims of education; Human Rights (the inherent rights of being a human being) as key goals of education – understood by parents and educators and hard for anyone to argue against this; tied into a notion of justice – although this is itself problematic; Issues related to pedagogies in terms of ensuring informed engagement or non-engagement; Is research evidence important in citizenship education – or is it self evident?; Redefine quality; Building in opportunities for participative, service learning in the programmes; Ensuring meaningful student voice and agency in education at all levels – as a right; A trawl of research evidence on the benefits to the individual, school and society of citizenship education; CPL for teachers;
