CLASS PEARL SETTLEMENT PATTERNS: ASHBOURNE

ASHBOURNE: PRE-1820S Prior to the 1820’s Ashbourne was non-existent, instead the area was known as the town of Killegland. The name changed to Ashbourne when a businesses man named Frederick Bourne established a village in the town in 1820. Bourne owned the roadway going through the town and had established a toll in the area to raise funds for maintaining the roads. He named the town ‘Ashbourne’ after himself and his favourite type of tree, the ‘Ash’ tree.

ASHBOURNE: 1830S

ASHBOURNE: 1970S Ashbourne didn’t develop much until the 1970s. At that time Ashbourne consisted of: A Church Scoile Mhuire Hunters Moon Kelly’s Pub Petrol Pump outside Lock’s O’Sullivan And no major housing estates. (No ALDERBROOK) In 1972 the area started to develop in order to cope with the urban sprawl effect coming from Dublin.

GARDEN CITY Construction began around the Garden City region to deal with the increase in population. This resulted in a greater need for residential housing, as well as a demand for a bigger primary school. Scoile Mhuire was relocated to Garden City and renamed “St. Declan’s National School”.

SCOIL MHUIRE – V – ST. DECLANS A second primary school “St. Mary’s National School” was founded in 1980 to further keep up with population demand.

ASHBOURNE COMMUNITY SCHOOL The introduction of this new residential estate to the area combined with the relocation of the school attracted a few small businesses to the area and raised the population of the once field full area. There was no secondary school constructed in the town until 1994 with the construction of Ashbourne Community School, located at the southern end of the town beside the local Community Centre.

ALDERBROOK This development encouraged more young families to settle in the area and as a result another housing estate was built near the secondary school. And once again this new housing estate placed a further demand on the commercial facilities available in the area.
