1
Graphing A step by step method
2
Line Graphs A line graph is a style of chart that is created by connecting a series of data points together with a line.
3
Pie Graphs While the pie graph is the most frequently used statistical chart, it is rarely used in scientific or technical publications. Pie charts work particularly well when the slices represent 25 or 50% of the data.
4
Bar Graphs A bar graph is a chart with rectangular bars with lengths proportional to the values that they represent. Bar charts are used for comparing values that were taken over time or under different conditions, usually used with a small data set.
5
5 Parts Of A Graph Title Independent variable (x axis) Dependent variable (y axis) Scale legend
6
Step 1 Draw axes Y is vertical x is horizontal x y
7
Step 2 Label the axes Name the axis Include units Remember y is dependent (effect) X is independent (cause) x y Time in minutes HeightIn cmHeightIn cm
8
To help you remember, think of D ependent R esponding Y axis M anipulating I ndependent X axis
9
Step 3 Determine the scale To do this look at your highest number. Decide what increments you need to have to fit on the axes. The axes can be scaled differently but the numbers follow a pattern. (3, 6, 9) or (10, 20, 30) NOT 3, 5, 10, 9, 17 (no pattern) x Time in minutes HeightIn cmHeightIn cm y 2 46810 5 15 20 25
10
Step 4 Title your graph The title should be something relevant to the two axes x Time in minutes HeightIn cmHeightIn cm 2 46810 5 15 20 25 Plant Growth Over 10 Days
11
Step 5 Plot Data Remember that you may need more than one color if there is more than one set of data. x Time in minutes HeightIn cmHeightIn cm 2 46810 5 15 20 25 Plant Growth Over 10 Days
12
Step 6 Connect all of the same colored dots together in order from left to right. x HeightIn cmHeightIn cm 2 46810 5 15 20 25 Plant Growth Over 10 Days
13
Step 7 Make a legend Put it near your graph x HeightIn cmHeightIn cm 2 46810 5 15 20 25 Plant Growth Over 10 Days =plant 1 = plant 2
