1 Scientific Methods I Peter Popper plants prodigious plots of pea plants. Every week Peter measures the height of his pea plants and records the results. What variables are being tested in Peter’s experiment? Height and time Independent variable – Dependent variable –Dependent variable – in an experiment, the variable being tested. In other words, it depends on the independent variable! Independent variable – in an experiment, a variable controlled by the experimenter.

2 Scientific Methods I Peter Popper plants prodigious plots of pea plants. Every week Peter measures the height of his pea plants and records the results. Time ( weeks ) Height ( cm ) 00 19.5 222.4 331.1 441.1 549.5 660.0

3 Scientific Methods I Peter Popper plants prodigious plots of pea plants. Every week Peter measures the height of his pea plants and records the results. Time ( weeks ) Height ( cm ) 00 19.5 222.4 331.1 441.1 549.5 660.0 Characteristics of a good graph 1.Every graph should have a title, most commonly in the form dependent variable vs. independent variable. Height vs. Time

4 Scientific Methods I Peter Popper plants prodigious plots of pea plants. Every week Peter measures the height of his pea plants and records the results. Time ( weeks ) Height ( cm ) 00 19.5 222.4 331.1 441.1 549.5 660.0 Characteristics of a good graph 2.Each axis should be labeled. Always use units! In general, the independent variable is graphed on the horizontal axis and the dependent variable is graphed on the vertical axis. Height vs. Time Time ( weeks ) Height ( cm )
