Physics 2015: Periodic Motion and Simple Harmonic Oscillators Purpose Recognize and analyze harmonic motion (a special case of the more general periodic motion). Learn about Amplitude Period Restoring force Spring constant Damped and un-damped harmonic motion

Physics 2015: Periodic Motion and Simple Harmonic Oscillators Basic Setup Force sensor Motion sensor (put on the floor below force sensor) Two springs (long and short): Attach to the force sensor. Attach a mass to the bottom of the spring.

Physics 2015: Periodic Motion and Simple Harmonic Oscillators Activity I and II: Observe the Periodic Motion These first two activities are intended to check the following physics aspects of periodic motion Position Velocity Acceleration Force Please be careful and don’t let the hanging masses crash into the motion sensors. They are easily damaged.

Physics 2015: Periodic Motion and Simple Harmonic Oscillators Activity III: Simple Harmonic Motion In this activity, you will check to see how the following physics properties affect a Simple Harmonic Oscillator: Amplitude Spring Constant Mass Your procedure will be essentially the same as that in Activity 1 and 2. Just follow the manual!

Physics 2015: Periodic Motion and Simple Harmonic Oscillators Activity IV: Damped Periodic Motion Remember that for damped motions friction has a substantial affect on the way the object is moving. You will analyze distance-time graphs velocity-time graphs acceleration-time graphs force-time graphs. See how damping changes your oscillations. You will also use acceleration-force and velocity-position graphs to compare to some of your results in Activity 1.
