How & Why We Annotate

Annotations can include: Marginalia (marginal notes) Highlighting Underlining Or any other marks we make, like using Post-it notes or Washi tape to flag a passage or quote How do we annotate?

Too much of a good thing…

Annotations are notes we make in a text to help us understand what we are reading We annotate a text in order to draw attention to various elements, such as: Figurative language Symbolism Themes Repetition Characterization Foreshadowing Memorable Quotes What is “annotation”?

For example…. Figurative language: “Her hair hung in little rolled clusters, like sausages.” Symbolism: “Although there was evening brightness showing through the windows of the bunkhouse, inside it was dark.” Repetition: Lennie’s strength mentioned 4 times (pg.39-43) Characterization: “He can’t think of nothing to do, but he sure can take orders.” Foreshadowing: “Trouble with mice is you always kill ’em”
