Civil War Amendments By: Courtney Neumann Almira Colic

13 th Amendment- Abolished Slavery Passed in January 1865 States had to ratify this amendment before they could be allowed back into the Union. Often called one the Civil War amendments.

14 th Amendment- Gives rights to all African Americans Passed June 1866 Cant take away any African Americans unalienable rights or property rights without “due process of law.” Passes because Congress wanted to ensure that African Americans would not lose the rights that the Civil Rights Act granted

15 th Amendment- Right to vote no matter your race. Prohibits government from denying a persons right to vote based on race. Congress will have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation. It prohibited the state and federal government from denying the right to vote to any male citizen because of “race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” Representatives thought that the power of the ballot would enable A.A. to protect themselves.

Men's rights vs. Women's rights The women opposed the 14th and 15th amendments since the men were getting more rights. Women felt they were being treated un-fair since even African American men had more rights than white women. Men were doing something about the issue so in return they got what they wanted. The women caught on and started to protest.
