2
The Library Systems Marketplace in 2007 Integrated library systems still the primary enterprise level software application but so last century…… Mature marketplace, little room for growth Further consolidation of marketplace likely recent merger of Endeavor with Ex Libris, Follett acquisition of Sagebrush, etc.
3
The Library Systems Marketplace in 2007 Vendors looking to secondary products to provide revenue streams electronic resources management systems link resolvers federated search software digital library platforms next generation discovery and access platforms
4
User’s information seeking behavior in 2007 Competition for users’ attention alternative information sources readily available alternativeinformationsourcesreadilyavailable “alternative” from the library perspective, not the users! users expect fast, easy access to information users trust the webweb “The user is not broken” K. Schneider
5
Implications for library systems Interfaces need to be simple to navigate users don’t want to choose between alternativesalternatives interfaces need to be divorced from library management systemsdivorced Tight integration of current generation OPAC’s to back room management modules a significant drawback library resources need to be discoverable in the user’s spacespace
6
Implications for library systems Integration with wider environments Course management systemssystems The larger webweb Current generation library systems serve as destinations on the network just as physical libraries did in the pre-Internet world – can we really expect users to prefer that destination to the other options available to them?
7
Options for the future Discovery and access portals divorcing library management systems from their user interfaces Open source systems re-engineering the integrated library system Disintegrated library systems disparate parts integrated to achieve the organizations needs
8
Discovery and access portals Attempt to provide unifying interface to multiple library resources catalog, databases, e-journals Most library systems vendors are offering some variant Ex Libris’s Primo, Innovative’s Encore typically attempt to include Web 2.0 concepts Some libraries are turning to offerings from outside the library marketplace Endeca at NCSU and FCLA – data based solution
9
Open Source Systems The premise is that the integrated library system still has development potential, but that the commercial marketplace will not provide products that reach that potential Open source integrated library systems have reached production status at a number of sites Evergreen Koha Still considerable ongoing development
10
Disintegrated Library Systems – Service oriented architectures “..a paradigm for organizing and utilizing distributed capabilities that may be under the control of different ownership domains” Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards Based on loosely coupled, interoperable applications applications Distribute library management processes over disparate applications that focus on the specific needs of each process
11
Do we need a next generation OPAC? Library patrons want access to library resources, not library interfaces Linking technologies like OpenURL and COiNS make exposure of library resources in other environments possible Open Worldcat (and now Local Worldcat?) provide alternative access to collections Can libraries go to their users (on the web) rather than vice versa?
