Welcome to Unit 4-AB140 WELCOME. We are in our 4 th week. “We will discuss Unit 4: the second of the four management functions: Organizing (POLC). We will examine the different ways in which a business organization can be structured and that each structure chosen has important implications for how that particular business is managed.” (AB140, Unit 4, Kaplan University.) “We will examine the characteristics of vertical and horizontal organizations. We will look at the different levels of authority within a business organization (span of control) and the topic of delegation.” (AB140, Unit 4, Kaplan University.) We will summarize at least one key vocabulary word from Unit 4. We will review Unit 3. 1

Unit 4: Delegation defined The act of getting someone to take on part of your responsibility and giving him/her sufficient authority to do that work. As Bateman & Snell stated (2012), “…the assignment of authority and responsibility to a subordinate at a lower level…getting work done through others.” (Bateman & Snell, Chapter 6, p. 126.) 10

Unit 4:Delegation “Lack of delegation skills is the number one reason why managers fail.” (Bateman & Snell, 2012. Unit 4: AB140.) You can always find someone to whom you can delegate. There are a number of reasons why people have trouble delegating. What is the most common reason people might give for NOT delegating? 12
