1 2.2 Properties of Water

2 Quick Lab!! Write a hypothesis predicting what will happen if you place a stalk of celery in colored water. List your supplies.

3 Water and Hydrogen Bonds
1. Water is a polar molecule Slight positive and slight negative end 2. Hydrogen Bond: Opposite charges from water molecules attract Not very strong

4 Properties Related to Hydrogen Bonds
1. High Specific Heat Water resists changes in temp Helps to maintain homeostasis 2. Cohesion Attraction molecules of same substance 3. Adhesion Attraction molecules of different substances (replay)

5 Many compounds dissolve in water
4. Solution: Mixture of substances equally A. 2 parts: 1. solvent: dissolves other substances, usually water 2. solute: dissolves in solvent

6 5. Polar molecules- dissolve in water
6. Nonpolar molecules- do not dissolve in water (polar) Examples: Fats and oils (replay)

7 Some compounds form acids or bases
High concentration of H+ ions 8. Base: Low concentration of H+ ions

8 9. pH Scale: A. 0-14 B. 0 very acidic C. 14 very basic D. 7 neutral
Assignment for Thurs: bring in 1 or 2 items you eat or drink to determine pH
