3 Overview To celebrate the Mass together To explore each element as we go through To learn some of the history and structure of the Mass To meet with God in word and sacrament.

5 Holy Communion –The act of sharing the sacred elements Lord’s Supper –The anemnesis Eucharist –The prayer of consecration Mass / Divine Liturgy –The whole thing!

6 Lectionary Today is Feria of 32 nd Week in Ordinary Time –Feria is a non-festival day. –Ordinary Time’s colour is green –Collect is taken from the preceeding Sunday (Year A) –Readings from the Weekday Lectionary (Year I)

7 Liturgical Colours Green –Ordinary Time Red –Martyrs, Good Friday, Pentecost Purple –Advent, Lent White / Gold –Easter, Christmas, Saints, Our Lady, Eucharistic Devotions Black –Funerals and Requiems

8 Vestments Not just an excuse for the priest to ‘dress nice’ Indicates the separation of the person from the role Priest stands ‘in vicare Christo’ – in the place of Christ, as an ikon of the Lord –Hence the title “Father” or “Mother”

9 Vestments Cassock –Middle Eastern standard dress Alb –White garment symbolising purity Stole –Badge of authority taken from Roman Magistrates Chasuble –Everyday outer garment adapted over centuries Cope –Processional Garment

10 Common Worship Order One Structure The people and the priest greet each other in the Lord’s name confess their sins and are assured of God’s forgiveness keep silence and pray a Collect proclaim and respond to the word of God pray for the Church and the world exchange the Peace prepare the table pray the Eucharistic Prayer break the bread receive communion depart with God’s blessing
