3 3 Why a Systems Security class? Security threats are ranked the highest concern for mid-size and large organizations in the U.S. Knowledge/skills in dealing with security threats is a “must” for MIS/Computer Science students

4 4 Business/IS versus Computer science professionals Computer science Business/IS professionals  Trained to work in hardware, software, and networking vendor firms.  Trained to develop network defense tools: encryption algorithms, firewalls’ filtering processes, etc.  Trained to work in end user organizations that need to implement security policies  Purchase, install, configure security tools  Monitor and manage security threats.

5 5 Course objectives Understand and discuss various types of systems attacks. Understand the technical aspect of each type of systems attack. Discuss the various defense systems including firewalls, intrusion defense systems, intrusion prevention systems, cryptographic systems, and antivirus software. Evaluate security policies and disaster recovery. Knowledge
